The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a two-year pre-university course, designed to facilitate the mobility of students and to promote international understanding. In Sweden a Preparatory Year precedes the IB Diploma Programme, so that the full Diploma Programme comprises three years of study. However, for international students it is also possible to join the programme at the beginning of the second year. At Grennaskolan, the language of instruction is English. Programme of Study
At the end of the Preparatory Year the student chooses six subjects; three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL).
In addition to the six subjects all Diploma candidates follow a course in Theory of Knowledge (TOK), submit an Extended Essay and complete a CAS programme (Creativity, Action and Service).
Assessment and Examination
The IB Diploma is awarded after a successful examination at the end of the final year. An unsuccessful student may try for a diploma two more times. At both Higher and Standard level each subject is graded on a scale of 1 to 7. The award of the Diploma requires a minimum total of 24 points. Three bonus points can also be gained through TOK and the Extended Essay. The maximum number of points is therefore 45.
Future Prospects
A student who scores good grades on the IB Diploma Programme has a high chance of being accepted at universities in approximately 100 countries all over the world, including Sweden.
Admission
The requirements for the IB Diploma Programme applicants are as follows:
Pre-DP

The completion of Swedish Lower School or the equivalent in a foreign school system.

Good written and spoken English.

Passing entrance examination test results in Mathematics and English.
DP1

The completion of the Pre-DP.

Year or similar in a foreign education system.

Good written and spoken English

Passing entrance examination test results in Mathematics and English.
The Preparatory Year Programme of Study is common to all students and grades are awarded from the Swedish Upper School system.

Each DP1 & DP2 student follows his/her individual Programme of Study according to the subject choices he/she has made (see information overleaf). N.B. There may be restrictions in the subjects that are offered if there is not a suffient number of applicants in a particular subject for that academic year.
